Popular Questions
“Do I have to take my pension income from the same company I have been building my pension fund with?”
No! - You now have what’s called an Open Market Option. This means you can take your pension fund to any other provider as they may give you a better deal than your present company.
What’s an annuity and do I have to buy one?
No! – You don’t have to purchase an annuity at retirement!
An annuity is a financial vehicle which promises to pay a guaranteed rate of income, for the rest of your life in return for the fund you have built up through your working life. The law has recently changed to say you are free to choose whether an annuity is the best for you or one of the other options of taking income at retirement.

What is Unsecured Income (USI) and can anyone use it?
Now this is where things start to get a bit more interesting!
USI, until recently, was known as Drawdown. It became available in the early 1990’s, but is really only suitable for people with larger funds, who want to make their own decisions on how much income they take and retain control of their investments for as long as possible. Click this button to find out more details.
I have heard about a new option called the 3rd Way, what is it?
This is a new approach from our American cousins, which has only recently become available in the UK. They have been using it successfully since the mid-1980s. It allows you to secure a guaranteed income or lock in guaranteed investment growth, without having to spend your entire pension fund and therefore you can continue to invest it yourself.

Can I take my Tax Free Cash and not take any income, if I don’t need it?
Yes!
Tax free cash now has an extremely un-user friendly title of Pension Commencement lump sum (PCLS)! What a mouth full? You do not have to take income when you take cash from your pension(s). However, you must take income before age 75 under present rules.
